Archaeological heritage
Deba has an important and large archaeological heritage. The limestone mountains that formed the extensive orography of the municipality have led to the formation of numerous hills, large underground caverns and caves, used by prehistoric men for their shelter.
Deba has more than 50 caves and prehistoric sites and in some of these caves the most valuable prehistoric sites in the Basque Conutry are hidden. Specifically, in the caves of Ekain, Praileaitz, Ermittia and Urteaga, cave paintings and abundant lithic and faunal material have been found that are fundamental for the study of Basque prehistory.
